“I was already a patient at Nephrology and had many open Renal surgeries. This prevented my ambition to be a Dr myself although supported by Professor Gerry Coles, my Nephrologist. When tiny spots of blood in my knickers appeared during mid monthly cycle. Very unusual as this never happened. 28 day, light period cycle. Saw my GP quickly but he thought maybe because I’d recently married. But this wasnt normal and he agreed to my request for a smear test. Smear results showed pre-cancerous cell change and laser treatment was required.
“I was given laser treatment at our capital city hospital, where I was asked if I minded interns and Dr’s in training being present. I 100% agreed as Dr’s didn’t apparently get to SEE the ‘living cell changes’ very often. I did chuckle and say, “its NOT my face you will see and my treatment being seen in situ could help other females in the future” There were more than a few Dr’s there and I was proud it could help new Dr’s for the future.
“The laser treatment was a tad gruelling but I was very lucky my GP had listened. I did hemorrhage as I was leaving the unit and rushed back to have the area cauterised as blood was suddenly gushing down my leg through the internal padding, but that was dealt with quickly and efficiently. 5 yrs later after monthly, quarterly and yearly testing, eventually all cleared. There was no support 40 yrs ago, which would have been appreciated to be honest.”
