Claire’s Campaign Motion Passes at Plaid Cymru Conference 2025

Plaid Cymru has unanimously passed a motion on Claire’s Campaign at their autumn party conference today (10 10 25).

“Where you live shouldn’t decide whether you live” – Nerys Evans.

The motion called for:

– A renewed Women’s Health Plan with a focus on gynaecological cancer

– An urgent review of emergency presentations

– Awareness campaigns with Public Health Wales

– Implementation of the Senedd Health and Social Care Committee’s Unheard Report recommendations in full

We are calling for urgent action on gynaecological cancers in Wales and building on Claire’s legacy to make sure women are listened to and change is delivered.

Every year in Wales, there are over 1000 cases of gynaecological cancers and they are the 4th most common cause of cancer among women here.

In 2021 alone, 373 women in Wales lost their lives to gynaecological cancers. Insight from @tenovuscancer shows that incidence and mortality for gynaecological cancers are higher in Wales than the UK average.

Only 34.6% met the 62-day cancer pathway target in July 2022. Three years later, progress has stalled at 32.4%, showing no lasting improvements.

Claire O’Shea sadly passed away on 12th May this year and last month marked her 43rd birthday, making the passing of today’s motion even more poignant. Her voice lives on through this campaign and through the women who continue to speak out.

Thank you for your powerful words Carmen Smith and Nerys Evans.
